About the Major

Major Requirements

The Cognitive Science major consists of ten approved courses taken at UVA (3 hours each) or 30 credit hours total.  YOU MUST TAKE:

  • AT LEAST ONE APPROVED COURSE IN EACH OF THE COGS 5 CORE AREAS:

    • Computer Science

    • Linguistics

    • Neuroscience

    • Philosophy

    • Psychology

  • TWO APPROVED UPPER LEVEL CONCENTRATION AREA COURSES:

You must select one of the five core areas above as your COGS Concentration. Two courses at the 3000 or 4000 level must be taken to complete the cognitive science concentration requirement. Areas with 3000+ course requirements are Philosophy, Computer Science, and Linguistics. Areas with 4000+ course requirements are Neuroscience and Psychology. Please note: Both upper level courses must be taken from the same core area. To concentrate in computer science, you must complete the CS Concentration Form with our area specialist. If you are double majoring in another COGS Area, you must concentrate in an area outside the second major. For example, if you are double majoring in COGS and Computer Science, you cannot do the COGS computer science concentration. Majors may request that the Program Coordinator (email cogsci@virginia.edu) add a second concentration after they have declared. Please remember that you cannot double concentrate in neuroscience and psychology and you cannot "share" upper level courses between concentrations. You must take two upper level approved classes in each concentration area to complete the concentration.

  • MATH REQUIREMENT:

Complete Math 1310 (Calculus I or higher) or Math 1220 (Applied Calculus ll) or APMA 1090 (Single Variable Calculus I or higher) or an equivalent approved course. If the requirement is fulfilled with test or transfer credit--it will not count toward the 30 program hours and will require you to take an additional approved course. Please note that Math 1210 will not fulfill the COGS requirement and if you take it at UVA-- you cannot also take 1310.

  • TWO to FOUR APPROVED COGS ELECTIVE COURSES:

Elective courses can be chosen from any of the five area approved lists and can also be higher level MATH courses above and beyond the COGS math requirementThe number of elective courses you will need to take to reach 30 hours depends upon if you have transfer or test credit for the math requirement and if you only take two upper level courses in your concentration. Please note that there are courses that can only count as elective credit and cannot be used for core course requirements.

  • PROGRAM GPA:

An overall grade point average of 2.0 or better for all Cognitive Science courses completed at the University.

  • MINIMUM COURSE GRADE:

A minimum grade of "C" is required for all courses to be applied to the major. Ungraded courses cannot be applied to the major. Exceptions to this rule include UVA COGS approved courses taken Spring 2020 where we accepted CR/GC grading and for academic year 20-21, where we are accepting the CR grade for COGS approved courses with a grade of CR due to the pandemic. Pandemic grading also applies to COGS approved courses taken in Summer Session 2021.

  • NOTE 3rd YEAR TRANSFER STUDENTS:  YOU WILL NEED TO DEFER THE COGS MAJOR UNTIL YOU HAVE COMPLETED TWO PRE-REQUISITE APPROVED COURSES AT UVA IN TWO DIFFERENT AREAS.
